Vyara, (Tapi): Torrent Group’s UNM Foundation today announced the inauguration of a 317-bed redeveloped transitional facility and also laid the Foundation Stone for new hospital, at the General Hospital, Vyara, as part of the UNM Medical College & General Hospital project, under a public-private partnership with the Government of Gujarat. This marks the accomplishment of the first stage development of the UNM Medical College and General Hospital project in Vyara.
Bhupendrabhai Patel, Chief Minister of Gujarat, inaugurated the newly built facility, and also performed the ground-breaking (Bhoomi Poojan) for a new 800-bed hospital building for UNM Medical College and General Hospital, which will replace the old 156 bed hospital.
Nareshbhai Maganbhai Patel, Minister for Tribal Development; and Dr Jayram Gamit, Minister of State for Coordination of Voluntary Organisations, Government of Gujarat, also graced the occasion.
The clinical services and patients at the existing Vyara General Hospital will be safely relocated to the redeveloped transitional facility, ensuring that the patients’ treatment and care continue uninterrupted while the new 800-bed hospital building is constructed.
This redeveloped transitional facility of 317-bed is located within the existing campus of the Vyara General Hospital, which will be transformed into an advanced healthcare facility, serving as a major hub for Tapi district, which shares its border with Maharashtra.
In the subsequent phase, a 150-seat MBBS medical college and hostel will be developed, offering young men and women from nearby rural areas the opportunity to pursue medical education closer to their homes. The total cost of the project is approximately Rs 910 Crores, which will be funded by the UNM Foundation.
By bringing specialised treatment and medical education to Vyara – the district headquarters of Tapi, the project will significantly reduce the need for patients to travel nearly 75 kilometres to Surat, benefitting close to 8 lakh people – especially the tribal communities in South Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The inauguration of the UNM transitional facility and the Bhoomi Poojan for construction of new UNM General Hospital, is the beginning of a new chapter in healthcare for Vyara and the surrounding region. The transitional facility ensures that patients continue to receive uninterrupted care while we build an 800-bed hospital and a 150-seat medical college, offering advanced treatment and affordable medical education for the people of the region,” said, Jinal Mehta, Director, Torrent Group.
Salient features of the 317-bed UNM Transitional Hospital:
- The project is a Public-Private Partnership with the Government of Gujarat.
- The facility has a carpet area of 9,986 square metres.
- Total functional beds – 317 (including 271 ward beds, 46 critical care beds)
- Enhanced OPD capacity from approx. 700 patients per day earlier, to 1200 patients per day at 24 dedicated OPD rooms across 17 clinical specialties.
- Fully-equipped 4 OT rooms (3 for major surgeries and 1 for caesarean / maternity); 1 – ER Minor OT and 1 post-mortem OT.
- Enhanced critical care infrastructure with 34 ICU Beds; 12 NICU/PICU beds and 6 ER beds
- Clinical and diagnostic services with advanced pathology/microbiology lab; functional blood storage centre; X-ray and USG facilities.
- Specialised Units: Newly developed 8-bed dialysis unit; Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD); Kangaroo Mother care room; and NRC Ward.
- Installed new-generation biomedical equipment, compliant with current safety and quality standards.
