Star Indian all-rounder Axar Patel is likely to be chosen as the Delhi Capitals’ IPL 2025 captain. He has even captained the Capitals in a few games during the past two seasons since joining the organization in 2019.
The team had bought KL Rahul in the mega auction, but now there is a greater prospect of becoming a permanent captain for him with the ANI report. Rajat Patel as a captain over the proven and experienced leaders like Rahul and Du Plessis while appointing, especially when Capitals had also acquired the seasoned players like Faf du Plessis in the latest super auction.
Before the mega auction of 2025, the franchise had retained four players, such as the Indian all-rounder, star of that side. He was the one to contribute greatly towards India’s win during last year’s T20 World Cup and was further replaced to become the vice-captain of India for the upcoming T20I series against England.
In the last two seasons, he has performed successfully for the Delhi Capitals, scoring over 200 runs and taking over ten wickets.
Many felt that the Delhi Capitals bought KL Rahul as, after paying a whopping INR 14 crore for him at the super auction, they were going to make him the captain. They also had co-owner Parth Jindal hinting that the team is going to go with Axar Patel as the skipper instead.
“It’s a little too early to even discuss the issue of the captaincy. Axar Patel has been here for a very long time and he had been the vice-captain during the previous cycle, so we do not know whether it is going to be Axar or someone else,” Jindal had told ESPNCricinfo.
He has been selected ahead of KL Rahul, but it is a very interesting selection, and probably, Rahul’s performance as IPL captain also has some relation to it. KL Rahul was bought by DC for 14 crores after being released by LSG after leading the Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.
Axar Patel will be the one who will start his team’s innings, so he needs to gather the guys together and take Delhi Capitals to the next level.
The Delhi franchise decided to part ways with Rishabh Pant after ending at sixth position last season and failing to win the Indian Premier League.
They have put together a very strong team this season, and they want to do better under Axar Patel now that the captain and management have changed.
