New Delhi (Staff Correspondent): Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav recently visited the Hyperloop testing facility at IIT Madras and he made an important announcement. He informed that the Hyperloop tube being developed at IIT Madras will soon become the world’s longest Hyperloop tube, with a length of 410 meters. This tube is currently recognized as Asia’s longest Hyperloop testing facility.
Revolutionary technology of Hyperloop
Hyperloop technology was conceptualized by famous engineer Elon Musk in 2013. It is a high-speed transportation system, in which pods are driven at speeds of over 1,000 km/h through a vacuum-sealed tube. The technology of Hyperloop has the potential to revolutionize the field of transportation, as it will not only make the journey faster, but it will also be more efficient and environmentally friendly. During his visit, Mr Vaishnaw also revealed plans to develop electronic components for Hyperloop at the Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory. He also said that India is committed to developing indigenous technology in this sector.
Live demo on Instagram
Ashwini Vaishnaw also shared a live demo of the Hyperloop tube on his Instagram account. In the post, he wrote, “Asia’s longest Hyperloop tube (410 m)… will soon be the world’s longest.” The message reflects the indigenous development of Hyperloop and India’s leading role in the future. The Ministry of Railways had allocated Rs 8.34 crore to IIT Madras for indigenous development and validation of Hyperloop technology in May 2022. The Union Minister expressed optimism about India’s readiness to develop a Hyperloop transportation system, highlighting the positive results achieved from this initiative. Mr Vaishnaw appreciated the efforts of IIT Madras for indigenous development of Hyperloop testing system. He said, “This place is so full of energy that I cannot describe it. I am happy to see young, energetic engineers here who are working on new technology. We are just getting a chance to help them a little bit. I am sure this will provide some amazing solutions for the country and our start-ups.”
Key role of IIT Madras
IIT Madras has contributed significantly to hyperloop research over the last seven years and continues to be a pioneer in the field. The institute recently hosted Asia’s first global hyperloop competition supported by the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. Also, state-of-the-art facilities like the 422-metre long student-run hyperloop test tube and track at IIT Madras have contributed significantly to the field.
Hyperloop project launched in India
TuTr Hyperloop, a deep-tech incubated startup based at IIT Madras, is set to launch the world’s first commercial hyperloop technology-based project in India next month. This historic milestone is an important step towards a self-reliant India and a developed India by 2047.
