Greater Noida (Staff Correspondent): If you are a fitness enthusiast and want to try something different in adventure, then the ‘Niesen Stairs’ of Mount Niesen in Switzerland can be a perfect challenge for you.
Recorded in the Guinness World Record as the longest staircase in the world, this staircase is 11,674 steps long and is located at a height of about 1,669 meters (5,476 feet). This climb will not only test your lungs but also test your courage, patience and determination.
The Niesen Stairs are located in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland and run alongside Mount Niesen, which is also called the “Swiss Pyramid” by the locals because of its pyramid-like shape.
Vlogger’s experience: One step, one struggle
Recently a travel vlogger accepted this challenge and shared his experience on Instagram. He started climbing at sunrise and was panting after climbing just 2,000 steps.
“My calves are already burning, but the beauty of the greenery, pine trees and Swiss Alps all make up for it,” he wrote. After he crossed 10,000 steps, he got his first glimpse of the summit and finally, upon reaching the summit, he was rewarded with a 360° panoramic view — including Interlaken, Spiez, Kandersteg and the snow-capped Alps.
Niesen-Treppenlauf: Stairs Race
If you want to climb the stairs in a competitive way and not just trek, you can take part in the annual “Niesen-Treppenlauf” race. It is considered the world’s highest vertical race.
First section: 2.1 km, 976 m elevation gain — approx. 70 minutes
Second section: 1.3 km, 700 m elevation gain
(It is imperative to cross the Hegeren tunnel early or you will be disqualified)
Pre-registration is required to participate in the race.
Funicular option also available
If climbing stairs is not your cup of tea, there is a 30-minute funicular ride available that takes you to the summit comfortably. The tram was built in 1906 and is now only operational for maintenance and special visitors.
