Mumbai: In a major breakthrough for India’s maritime innovation and self-reliance, Neptunus Power Plant Services Pvt. Ltd. and the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Maritime India Week 2025 to pioneer the world’s first indigenous marine engine condition-monitoring technology. The event was witnessed by the Prime Minister of India and marks a significant stride toward Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.

Under this strategic collaboration, IRS has awarded Type Approval Certification to Neptunus for two cutting-edge technologies — VIB 360, an Engine Condition Monitoring System, and Torque Sense SHAPOLI. These are the first IRS-certified, indigenously developed condition-monitoring solutions for marine diesel engines and propulsion systems, positioning India as a global leader in maritime diagnostics.

Traditionally, ship maintenance relied on fixed OEM intervals, often conservative and expensive. With VIB 360, fleets can now adopt Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM), enabling real-time diagnostics that reduce unplanned downtime, enhance reliability, and cut maintenance costs by up to 30%. The system also improves fuel efficiency and lowers emissions, aligning with India’s Digital Maritime Vision and Green Shipping goals.

The MoU outlines a joint effort to develop frameworks and standards for CBM, helping the maritime industry transition from time-based to data-driven maintenance practices. This shift is expected to redefine operational protocols, extend asset life, and boost sustainability across India’s shipping sector.

“This MoU with the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) reinforces our belief that Indian engineering can shape the global maritime future,” said Uday Purohit, MD & CEO of Neptunus Power Plant Services Pvt. Ltd. “We thank IRS for its vision and trust in Indian innovation. This Type Approval is more than a certification; it validates India’s capability to design and deliver data-led maritime technologies that meet global standards. Together, we are paving the way for Indian-built systems to enhance safety, efficiency, and operational reliability across the world’s shipping fleets.”

Akshay Purohit, Director & COO, added, “This MoU is a step toward making condition-based maintenance a mainstream reality in India’s maritime sector. By combining local innovation with data-driven insights, we are creating a framework that can reduce downtime, improve fuel efficiency, and extend asset life. Together with IRS, we aim to redefine how the shipping industry manages its engines; with systems built and certified in India.”

The collaboration between IRS and Neptunus not only strengthens India’s maritime capabilities but also sets the stage for global deployment of Indian-built, export-ready technologies. It reflects a growing confidence in India’s ability to deliver high-performance, compliant solutions that meet international standards.
