New Delhi. Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal on Friday apologised to a customer after a customer informed him that he was being charged for selecting “veg mode” on the app to order vegetarian food. Bengaluru resident Rohit Ranjan revealed on LinkedIn that he was charged ₹2 as a “veg mode enablement fee” on Zomato.

This was the post

“Being a vegetarian in India these days feels like a curse. Zomato’s latest masterstroke – introducing an ‘additional fee’ for the veg enablement fleet – has officially converted us to premium subscription plans,” the customer wrote, adding that being vegetarian comes with a “luxury tag”. The user tagged Goyal and Zomato in his post.

This was the reply

The billionaire CEO responded to his post a day later, and apologised profusely for the “absolutely stupid” action on Zomato’s part. “This is absolutely stupid on our part. I am very sorry for this. The charge will be removed today itself. Also whatever needs to be fixed in the team will be fixed so that such a mess does not happen again,” he wrote. Goyal replied to the customer in the comments section. The customer thanked Deepinder Goyal for his response and quick action.

“What surprised me the most during this journey was that the idea was successfully taken forward from the ideation stage to execution and also got the approval of senior stakeholders,” Rohit Ranjan told Goyal on LinkedIn.

When Zomato removed green dress code for ‘pure vegetarian’ fleet

Zomato launched its “pure vegetarian mode” in March last year, keeping in mind customers who prefer a vegetarian diet. Once selected, the feature shows users only vegetarian dishes or vegan food from all restaurants called “Pure Veg Restaurants”. However, amid protests, Zomato rolled back the on-ground separation of the “Pure Veg Mode” fleet using green colour. Goyal had said at the time that all delivery agents will continue to wear the company’s signature red colour.
