New Delhi: In a historic milestone for India’s coal sector, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) on Thursday formally handed over the site of its 2.0 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Dugda Coal Washery to JSW Steel Limited. The site handover ceremony was held at Coal Bhawan headquarters and was attended by BCCL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Manoj Kumar Agrawal, senior executives of BCCL, and officials from JSW Steel and JSW Energy.
The asset monetisation of the Dugda Coal Washery, undertaken under the guidance of the Ministry of Coal, marks the country’s first coal washery monetisation initiative. The project represents a significant step toward modernising coal sector assets, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring more effective and optimal utilisation of resources through private sector participation.
The initiative is expected to enhance coal beneficiation capacity, promote better utilisation of domestic coking coal, and increase the availability of high-quality washed coking coal. It is also expected to support the objectives of the Government of India’s ‘Mission Coking Coal’ by reducing dependence on imported coking coal and contributing to foreign exchange savings.
JSW’s participation in the project is anticipated to improve coal supply chain efficiency, encourage sustainable and modern coal processing, create new employment opportunities, and accelerate industrial development in Jharkhand and surrounding regions. The initiative is also expected to play a key role in advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat while strengthening the country’s self-reliant and resilient coal sector.
