New Delhi: OMC Power commissioned one of India’s first distributed renewable energy–based UPS solution integrating repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries for stationary storage, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy, power resilience, and circular economy journey. Commissioned in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, the project is also the first on-ground execution of Honda Motor Co. Ltd.’s strategic investment in India’s distributed power solutions business.

Designed specifically for areas where regular and reliable grid power remains a challenge, the solution delivers uninterrupted, low-emission electricity through a combination of distributed renewable generation and advanced battery storage. By repurposing EV batteries originally used in electric two- and three-wheelers, the project extends battery life while addressing critical last-mile power reliability issues.

Rohit Chandra, Co-Founder & CEO, OMC Power, said, “The commissioning of this project in Hardoi marks a decisive shift from pilot to scale. This is a distributed UPS solution built for India’s power realities, where the combination of reliability and availability makes power significantly more dependable. By repurposing EV batteries, we are creating a scalable, storage-led energy model that can be rapidly deployed across telecom infrastructure, healthcare facilities, MSMEs, and institutions in geographies needing reliable power. This strengthens our go-to-market strategy as we move towards our 1 GWp decentralised clean energy ambition.”

The Hardoi installation positions Uttar Pradesh as the leading state in India to commercially deploy a storage-led distributed UPS solution using repurposed EV batteries, reinforcing its leadership in decentralised clean energy innovation.

The project represents the first operational milestone under the Honda–OMC strategic partnership announced in October 2025, translating collaboration into tangible impact on the ground. It also marks Honda’s first investment globally in India’s distributed power and UPS solutions space, expanding its electrification strategy beyond mobility into community and infrastructure-level energy resilience.

The system is engineered to provide round-the-clock backup power, significantly reducing dependence on diesel generators. It is particularly suited for telecom towers, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, MSMEs, and local enterprises. By combining clean energy generation with repurposed battery storage, the solution offers a commercially viable and environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional backup power systems.

Over the past several years, Honda and OMC Power jointly conducted pilot and demonstration projects in Uttar Pradesh to validate the secondary use of swappable and portable EV batteries for stationary applications. The Hardoi commissioning represents the first full-scale commercial deployment emerging from these pilots.

Through this commissioning, OMC Power and Honda are laying the foundation for scaling storage-based Energy-as-a-Service (EaaS) and distributed UPS solutions across sectors and geographies where power reliability improves efficiencies—creating a new growth vertical at the intersection of clean energy and the EV ecosystem.

The initiative aligns strongly with Make in India, Aatma Nirbhar Bharat, circular economy principles, and India’s Net Zero 2070 commitments, while delivering immediate, measurable impact at the grassroots.
