New Delhi (Staff Correspondent): A Reddit post by an Indian techie has raised serious questions about the country’s outsourcing-based IT culture. In the post, the anonymous techie has urged US clients to “keep calm” and understand the ground reality of Indian workers. Titled “My American friends who outsource to India, please keep calm”, the post has gone viral and has once again given new life to an age-old debate — are impossible expectations being placed on Indian IT professionals?

In the post, the techie wrote, “If you are outsourcing work to India and feel like you are breathing down our necks every minute, take a deep breath. The average IT graduate here earns ₹7 lakh per annum (\~\$8,000) but is expected to deliver Google-level performance.” He further added that factors like late-night meetings, deadline pressure, and micromanagement are taking a toll on Indian tech workers mentally and physically.

Divided opinions on Reddit: Empathy, disagreement and the harsh reality

The post garnered thousands of reactions on Reddit. While many users agreed with the author, some questioned the salary figures. Many said that in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, IT professionals, especially those who graduate from non-premium colleges, get salaries limited to ₹15,000-₹20,000 per month.

One user wrote, “Indian companies lie to clients — put a fresher on a project saying he has five years of experience. Then when you fail to perform, the blame falls on you.” Many users shifted the debate from US clients to Indian companies and their middle management. One user said, “7 LPA is your salary, but the client is charging 20 LPA for your services. So the client will demand the same output. The real cheating is done by your company.”

NRI perspective also came to the fore

In some comments, Indians living in the US also shared that this culture has been nurtured by Indians. One wrote, “Our parents instilled the habit of micromanagement. So now we try to avoid it. But Indian managers are repeating the same cycle.”

This discussion shows that India’s IT sector is lacking not only in salaries but also in respectful work-culture. As India is becoming a hub of global tech outsourcing, it has become necessary that companies also focus on long-term partnerships, mental health and well-being of employees rather than just cost.
