Rourkela (Staff Correspondent): A team of skilled doctors at Ispat General Hospital (IGH) of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), has successfully performed an arthroscopic ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) reconstruction surgery on a 15-year-old boy, showcasing the hospital’s advanced medical capabilities.

Priyabrata Kandi, son of Purna Chandra Kandi, Junior Manager (T&RM), RSP, was admitted to IGH on 22nd April, 2025, with complaints of knee instability and pain in his right knee following a football injury. An MRI conducted at IGH revealed a torn ACL, a condition which, if left untreated in young patients, can lead to chronic knee problems.

To address the issue, doctors recommended an arthroscopic ACL reconstruction — a minimally invasive procedure that involves reconstructing the torn ligament using the patient’s own tissue. Unlike traditional open surgery, this advanced technique requires only two small incisions, significantly reducing post-operative pain and enabling faster recovery.

This particular surgery was noteworthy due to the patient’s adolescent age. The surgical team preserved remnants of the original ligament during the reconstruction, a technique that offers added protection and facilitates better integration of the new ligament into the bone.

“We are extremely grateful to the expert team at IGH for their excellent care. The success of the surgery here saved us from having to travel to distant medical centers, thus saving both time and cost,” said Kandi, expressing his heartfelt gratitude to the medical team.

The procedure was executed with precision by a skilled team led by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Tiwari, Additional CMO and Head of the Orthopedics Department, along with orthopedic surgeons Dr. S. Rout and Dr. Naman. Anesthesia support was provided by Dr. M. Samantaray, Deputy CMO and the anesthesia team. The patient is currently undergoing postoperative rehabilitation at IGH and is on track for a swift recovery.

It is worth mentioning that IGH was the first hospital in Western Odisha to procure arthroscope and initiate arthroscopic surgeries. Over the past decade, the hospital has consistently performed advanced arthroscopic procedures, supported by cutting-edge equipment and a team of experienced specialists—delivering excellent outcomes at minimal cost for patients across the region.
