New Delhi: SJVN has achieved Commercial Operation Date (COD) of Unit-II (660 MW) of 1320 MW Buxar Thermal Power Project on Saturday.

Bhupender Gupta expressed gratitude to Central and State Governments, Ministry of Power and other key Ministries and Departments for their constant guidance and support. He also appreciated collective commitment, dedication and perseverance of SJVN employees and all stakeholders who have directly or indirectly contributed to achievement of this significant milestone.

On this occasion, Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Personnel), Parthajit De, Director (Finance) and Rajesh Kumar Chandel, Director (Projects) congratulated all employees and associated stakeholders on this historic achievement.

With commissioning of Unit-II, both units of Buxar Thermal Power Project are commercially operational, bringing full 1320 MW capacity into operation. This is also first thermal power project of SJVN to become fully operational.

The 1320 MW (2×660 MW) Buxar Thermal Power Project, located at Chausa in Buxar District, Bihar, has been implemented by SJVN Thermal Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of SJVN. Earlier, Unit-I (660 MW) of the project was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 22, 2025 and had achieved Commercial Operation Date on November 14,2025.

Buxar Thermal Power Project is based on state-of-the-art supercritical technology and is equipped with advanced emission-control systems, ensuring higher operational efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Developed at a total investment of 13,756.56 crore (Revised at June 2025 price level), project is expected to generate 9828.72 million units of electricity annually at 85% Plant Load Factor. Of the total power generated, 85% has been allocated to Bihar under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement. The project will substantially enhance power availability in Bihar and Eastern Region, help reduce peak-hour shortages and contribute to strengthening energy security.

During the construction phase, the project engaged approximately 65,000 workers across various stages of development. Project has created substantial direct and indirect employment and economic opportunities particularly for local communities and this multiplier effect is expected to continue during operational phase as well.

SJVN has also undertaken several community development initiatives in and around project area, with focus on education, healthcare, sanitation, access to safe drinking water, women empowerment and other areas of socio-economic development.

Successful commercial operation of Unit-II represents not only a major milestone in strengthening India’s power generation capacity but also reflects SJVN’s steadfast commitment to energy security, regional development, employment generation and inclusive socio-economic progress.
