Rourkela (Staff Correspondent): With the advent of the monsoon season, the Civil Engineering Services (CE(S)) Department of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has undertaken the mammoth task of Monsoon Preparation to ensure smooth and uninterrupted production across the plant.

As part of this crucial initiative, the CE(S) department is executing maintenance and cleaning of all major roadside drains as well as the underground drainage network on a war footing. Key operational zones such as the Iron & Steel area, Coke Oven & CCD area, Expansion area, and Rolling Mill area are being covered under this intensive drive. Approximately 25 kilometers of main drains and several smaller roadside drains are being cleaned thoroughly.

Special attention has been given to critical drainage channels like Guradih Nallah and the North Channel, which carry the entire storm and drainage water from the plant. These are being cleared at identified critical patches to ensure smooth discharge of rainwater during heavy downpours and to maintain optimal water levels. Besides, all outfalls and grills along the plant boundary are being continuously cleaned and maintained. The six gates at various outfall channels remain fully operational to support this initiative.

Both mechanised and manual cleaning methods are being employed, depending on the specific requirements of each area.

Simultaneously, preventive maintenance activities are also being carried out. This includes the replacement of GC sheets on the roofs of various plant units to ensure protection against rainwater ingress, as well as water-proofing of key electrical installations, control rooms, and other critical infrastructure.

All monsoon preparation activities are scheduled for completion by 10th June 2025. Moreover, a 24×7 Flood Control Room will be operational at the CE(S) office from 15th June to 30th September 2025. This control room will ensure round-the-clock monitoring and coordination with other departments to promptly address any monsoon-related issues.
