Mumbai (Education Desk): The country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) university will be set up in the state of Maharashtra. State Information Technology Minister Ashish Shelar made this announcement on Saturday and informed that a special task force has been formed to make this project a reality. This university will promote research, development and innovation in AI and related fields and encourage coordination between industry, education and government.
New direction in AI education
Shelar said that this university will become a center of education and research in the field of AI. It aims to establish Maharashtra as a major center for AI education, skill development, technological innovation and policy making. He said that this move is in line with the BJP’s election manifesto, which laid special emphasis on technological development and use of technology. The minister also said that the university will act as an institution that will promote new ideas and innovations as well as provide high quality education.
Formation of Task Force
A task force has been formed for the planning and implementation of this project, which includes experts from academia, industry and government. Shelar informed that this task force will be headed by the Principal Secretary of the Department of Information Technology. In addition, the directors of IIT Mumbai and IIM Mumbai, representatives of leading companies like Google India, Mahindra Group and L&T will also be part of this task force. Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India and experts from Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission and Data Security Council of India are also actively involved in this initiative.
Objective and plan of the university
Shelar said, “This university will promote research and development in AI and related fields. It will encourage collaboration between industry, academia and government as well as strive to make Maharashtra a hub of AI education and innovation.” He also said that the establishment of this university will build capacity in the field of AI and data science in the state of Maharashtra, which will lead to technological development not only of the state but the entire country.
The main objective of this university is not only to provide education in AI but also to promote technological innovation and new research work through it. This institute will work in collaboration with various government and private organizations, so that technical education can be implemented practically and students can be trained according to the needs of the industry.

The task force has held two meetings so far and is working on finalizing the roadmap for setting up the university.
