London: The study abroad market is growing year on year, but the way students are making decisions is changing just as fast. For years the order was clear. The US came first, Australia and Canada followed close behind, and the UK sat as the respected but often overlooked alternative. That hierarchy is being rewritten in real time.

The ongoing US visa crisis, combined with tightening policies in Australia, has pushed a growing number of Indian students to look more carefully at their options. And more often than not, that second look is landing in the UK. According to the Higher Education Policy Institute, Indian students issued a UK study visa in Q1 2025 numbered 19,300, a 31% increase over Q1 2024, with a grant rate rising to 96%. According to the UK Home Office Indian students accounted for 98,014 study visa grants in the year ending June 2025, representing 24% of all sponsored study visas issued.

Sonal Kapoor, Global Chief Business Officer, stated, “The truth is that for many Indian students, the UK was never really a backup. It was the first preferred choice, which they had talked themselves out of, often because of a perception that it was more competitive or harder to get into. When visa disappointments elsewhere forced a rethink, students found that the UK had been there all along, with strong approval rates, world-class institutions, and a reputation that needs no introduction.”

Sonal further added, “While the US remains the go-to destination for STEM programmes, the UK holds one of the most diverse academic ecosystems in the world. From law and business to engineering and the arts, the range and quality of degrees on offer is hard to match. It is no surprise that when students do not want to wait or take their chances elsewhere, the UK is where they turn.”

What we are noticing is a new behaviour pattern driven by all this uncertainty that is becoming increasingly common. Students are holding multiple offers across multiple countries at the same time, keeping their options open until the last possible moment. Which means students might hold a confirmed seat at a UK university, a conditional offer from an Australian institution, and an application pending in Germany, paying deposits across all three while waiting to see which visa arrives first. It is not indecision. It is a strategy. Though for some students this can add financial pressure, in such a competitive era, it is often the most practical path to securing that international degree.

Sonal Kapoor has a clear message for students navigating this. “We have always said this to students, do not rush your decisions. Always speak to an expert, understand your options, and plan ahead. A platform like NovaGrad can help you plan your study abroad journey for free. For students worried about the financial side, we at Prodigy Finance are built precisely for this moment, to help you move forward without letting funding be the reason you miss your opportunity.”

Germany is no longer just an alternative. It is becoming a popular choice as well for many. According to the Wissenschaft Weltoffen 2025 report at DAAD, with 402,000 international students were enrolled at German universities in the winter semester 2024/25, a 6% increase from the previous year. India being the largest country of origin with just under 59,000 students, up by 20% in a single year. The combination of affordable tuition fees for private institutions, a friendly visa process, and an 18-month post-study job seeker visa is proving hard to resist for many. Also, good news for students is that, according to the German Federal Foreign Office, the country has introduced a gratis visa in September 2025, allowing Indian students to make short-term academic visits free of charge.

The class of 2026 is not the same as the class of 2019. They are researching more, planning earlier, and refusing to be held hostage by a single outcome. The destinations that offer reliability, reputation, and a clear path forward after graduation are the ones winning their attention. Right now, that list is led by the UK and growing fast to include Germany.
