New Delhi (National Desk): The recently released Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2025 has exposed the current state of global climate efforts, revealing a grim reality—no country was found worthy of the top three places. That is, no country’s performance was so excellent on all parameters that it could be given an overall “very high” rating.

What is CCPI?

The CCPI is an annual report that evaluates the efforts against climate change of 63 major countries of the world and the European Union. These countries are responsible for more than 90% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

The index evaluates countries on four key parameters:

  1. Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
  2. Use of renewable energy
  3. Intensity of energy use
  4. Climate policy

India’s position – 10th

India has secured 10th place in this year’s ranking. This is a slight drop from last year, but India is still among the top 10—indicating that India is playing a leading role in climate efforts on the global stage.

India’s performance categories:

– GHG emissions: High score

– Energy use: High score

– Climate policy: Medium rating

– Renewable energy: Low score

The report said that India has made significant progress in the field of solar energy, with large-scale solar projects and rooftop solar schemes leading the way. Apart from this, the increasing use of electric two-wheelers has also been seen as a positive change.

However, India’s dependence on coal is still a matter of concern. India is among the major holders of coal reserves and the government is working on plans to increase its production, which poses a challenge for renewable energy efforts.

Performance of other countries

Top 10 countries:

– Note: The first three positions are vacant this time too.

7 | Philippines | 68.41 |

8 | Morocco | 68.32 |

9 | Norway | 68.21 |

10 | India | 67.99 |

Denmark performed well in GHG emissions and renewable energy, while the UK scored high in GHG and energy use. However, both countries have relatively low ratings in renewable energy.

Top 10 worst performing countries:

Location | Country | Score |

67 | Iran | 17.47 |

66 | Saudi Arabia | 18.15 |

65 | UAE | 19.54 |

61 | Kazakhstan | 33.43 |

60 | Taiwan | 34.87 |

59 | Argentina | 35.96 |

58 | Japan | 39.23 |

Major emitters like China (55th), the US (57th), and Canada have fared poorly, highlighting the need for developed nations to step up their responsibility and commitment. The CCPI 2025 report highlights the fact that the world is still far from achieving its climate goals. Be it the 1.5°C target or limiting carbon emissions—there is a need for concerted and accelerated efforts at the global level. While India has made progress on many fronts, its dependence on coal and low score in renewable energy indicate that it needs to move more seriously towards its goals. The climate crisis is a global challenge and every country will have to play a sincere role to solve it.
