New Delhi: As part of its ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and dismantle the infrastructure enabling such illicit activities, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted coordinated searches at five locations in the Cachar District of Assam. These operations, undertaken under Operation Chakra, resulted in the arrest of three individuals, including the Territorial Sales Manager of a telecom company.
The arrests stem from a case registered by the CBI concerning the unauthorized sale of SIM cards across India. These SIM cards were reportedly used in the commission of various cybercrimes, including digital arrest frauds, impersonation, fraudulent advertisements, investment scams, and UPI-related frauds.
Investigations have revealed that the Territorial Sales Manager, based in Silchar, Assam, colluded with middlemen, distributors, and Point of Sale (PoS) agents to issue SIM cards without the consent or knowledge of the individuals in whose names the cards were officially registered. These actions were in clear violation of established regulatory guidelines and procedures. The SIM cards were allegedly sold in bulk at inflated prices to intermediaries, who subsequently used them to facilitate cybercriminal activities.
The operation is aimed at curbing the unauthorized issuance and misuse of SIM cards distributed through PoS agents and telecom channels. The searches led to the seizure of incriminating materials, including mobile phones, electronic devices, and Know Your Customer (KYC) documentation.
This enforcement action reflects the Government of India’s unwavering commitment to addressing cybercrime and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable. It also highlights the strategic focus on dismantling the networks and infrastructure that enable such offenses.
The arrested individuals have been presented before the local Magistrate Court, and transit remand has been obtained. They are scheduled to be produced before the jurisdictional FIR Court on the following day. The investigation remains ongoing.
