Anupam Mittal on Career Growth: New Promotion Strategies vs. Old ModelsShaadi.com founder and Shark Tank India lead investor Anupam Mittal recently shared his views on job promotions and career progression on LinkedIn. Mittal in his post challenged the traditional promotion model, in which promotions are given based on tenure, and explained that the key to success in today’s fast-changing market is speed, progression and ownership. He also said that the old model, in which ‘loyalty’ was considered a parameter of success, is now obsolete. Sharing his views, Mittal wrote, “Earlier it was believed that tenure = promotion. If you were ‘loyal’, you moved ahead. But now times have changed.”

Importance of speed and agility

Anupam Mittal explained in his post how the importance of speed and agility has increased nowadays. He said the current market is moving 10 times faster, and if you take months to adopt an idea or strategy, you are already outdated. He believed success today requires rapid change and continuous improvement. “Rapid iteration and new intelligence are the measure of success today,” Mittal said.

Difference between progress and speed

Mittal then explained the difference between progress and speed. He shared his personal experience, saying he once worked for 90 hours, but did not see any significant results at that time. At the same time, a thoughtful and right decision can be far more valuable than months of noise. “Running in the same place is not progress. Real progress is when we measure our progress on a weekly basis,” Mittal said.

Need for ownership and accountability

Mittal also said that ownership and accountability are needed in today’s workplace. “In the new age workplace, one has to take initiative, make decisions and drive things forward,” he said. He also pointed out that an employee should feel ownership in their role rather than just doing the work, so that they can deliver better results.

Don’t wait for a promotion

Sharing his views, Mr Mittal also said that “waiting for your company to give you a promotion is a terrible way to manage your career.” He believed that to control the direction of your career, you should align with your business objectives, provide uncompromising value and then ask for the position or compensation you deserve.

Users react

Many users reacted to Mittal’s views. While some appreciated his approach, some also noted that his post was written from the perspective of business owners and not employees. “This is a good approach, but it could be customized a little more for employees,” wrote one user. Another user said, “If I align with business objectives and provide inconsistent value, yet I have to ask for that position, it tells me there may be a problem with the system.” Anupam Mittal’s approach has challenged the traditional thinking about career progression and promotion. He believes that in today’s fast-changing workplace, we should prioritize speed, agility, and ownership in our work. This approach can be an inspiration not only for employees but also for companies, making their work environment more dynamic and effective.
