Greater Noida (National Desk), December 10: Bhim Army Chief and Indian parliamentarian Chandra Shekhar Aazad on Tuesday demanded strict ban on the entry of genetically modified (GM) crops into India. He said that keeping in mind the farmers and the environment, a strict ban should be imposed on the entry of GM crops into India. He also said that comprehensive and independent testing of the effects of GM crops should be conducted according to Indian conditions.

Chandra Shekhar Aazad met with Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan giving him a letter to formulate a national policy on GM crops.

Chandra Shekhar Aazad said that they have supported the farmers’ movement in the past and they also support the current farmers’ movements “Dilli Chalo” and expect immediate action from the government on the following demands:

1. MSP guarantee should be made a law.
2. Crop prices should be fixed on the basis of the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.
3. Farmers’ loans should be waived off.
4. Compensation should be given to the families of the farmers martyred in the movement.
5. Land Acquisition Act 2013 should be re-implemented.
6. Electricity Amendment Bill-2020 should be cancelled.
7. The culprits of Lakhimpur Kheri incident should get strict punishment.

He said, “The voice of the country’s food-providers, the farmers, cannot be ignored. Their demands are not only justifiable, but are also essential for the future of the country’s agricultural system and millions of families.”

“I appeal to central government to take positive steps on these issues as soon as possible. The people of the country are also requested to support this just struggle of the farmers,” he added.
