New Delhi: An unfortunate incident occurred in the Tail Race Tunnel (TRT) of the Vishnugad-Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Project (VPHEP) on August 13, 2026, at approximately 6:20 PM. A large volume of water and debris suddenly entered the tunnel at Chainage 1440 meters (face-II), accompanied by a loud noise. At the time of the incident, concrete lining work was underway at Chainage 1230 meters, where a total of 22 workers engaged/deployed by the principal executing agency, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), were working.

According to the information received so far, seven workers have lost their lives, three workers are missing, and twelve workers have been rescued and admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment. One of the injured workers has been discharged from the hospital after receiving the necessary treatment. THDC management expresses its deep condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased workers and is providing all possible medical assistance and support to the injured workers.

Relief and rescue operations were immediately launched in coordination with the district administration upon receiving information about the incident. Currently, joint teams comprising THDCIL, Hindustan Construction Company (HCC), NDRF, SDRF, CISF and the district administration are engaged in search and rescue operations for the missing workers. Necessary resources and equipment have been deployed to remove water and debris from the tunnel and facilitate the safe movement of rescue teams. Relief and rescue operations are underway.

Senior management officials of THDCIL, including the Managing Director, are present at the site and are coordinating with the concerned agencies while directly overseeing the relief and rescue operations.

THDCIL management has clarified that the search and rescue operations for the missing workers are being accorded the highest priority. The company is utilizing all necessary resources in full coordination with the district administration and all concerned agencies. Furthermore, the company is committed to ensuring proper medical treatment for the injured workers and providing all possible assistance to the affected workers and their families.

The safety of workers remains the top priority, and all possible resources and support are being provided for the relief and rescue operations. A detailed assessment of the causes and circumstances of the incident will be conducted in coordination with the competent authorities/agencies.
