New Delhi: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Hystar AS, Norway have entered into a strategic tie-up which shall enable phased indigenisation and local manufacturing of PEM electrolyser systems for green hydrogen projects in India.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Y. Srinivas Rao, Executive Director (Heavy Power Equipment Plant, Hyderabad), and Mr. Sutripto De, General Manager & Head (New & Renewable Energy Business), on behalf of BHEL, and by Mr. Fredrik Mowill, CEO (Hystar) on behalf of Hystar AS Norway; in the presence of Mr. Arvinn Eikeland Gadgil, Chargé d’Affaires, Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi, and Ms. Bani Varma, Director (Industrial Systems & Products, BHEL), Mr. S M Ramanathan, Director (Engineering, Research & Development, BHEL), and other senior officials.

Notably, BHEL has already entered into a strategic tie-up with thyssenkrupp nucera India Private Limited for alkaline electrolyser systems earlier this year. This collaboration with Hystar for PEM electrolyser systems further strengthens BHEL’s position as one of the few Indian players capable of offering both alkaline and PEM electrolyser solutions to serve the country’s emerging green hydrogen market. Moreover, the collaboration will also strengthen BHEL’s project execution capabilities for green hydrogen projects in India.

BHEL is one of India’s leading engineering and manufacturing companies, with decades of experience across power, transmission, renewables, oil & gas, transportation, defence and aerospace sectors. The company has played a key role in building India’s industrial infrastructure and is now leveraging its engineering, manufacturing and project execution capabilities to address emerging clean energy areas, including Green Hydrogen.

This agreement marks a significant step in enhancing BHEL’s contribution to the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the Government of India’s Make in India initiative.
