New Delhi: In a landmark moment for India’s maritime security, INS Taragiri, the indigenously built stealth frigate by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), was formally commissioned into the Indian Navy at Visakhapatnam on Friday, April 3, 2026 by the hands of Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh.
Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), Mumbai, INS Taragiri is the third in the series of Project 17A, indicating another leap in India’s indigenous warship design and construction. The basic design of the ship is carried out by the Indian Navy’s in-house design organization viz. Warship Design Bureau. MDL has undertaken the detailed design & construction of the ship and Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai) has overseen the construction.
The ship, 149.02 M long, 17.8 M wide and drawing a displacement of 6400 Tons, is propelled by a combination of two (02) Gas Turbines and two (02) Main Diesel Engines (CODOG) which enables the ship to achieve a speed of over 28 knots at design displacement. INS Taragiri is equipped with State-of-the-art stealth features, advanced weapon systems, cutting-edge sensors and high-tech automation systems for streamlined operational efficiency. As part of the Project 17A class, the entry of INS Taragiri into the fleet will substantially enhance India’s surveillance, operational reach, and maritime security across the Indian Ocean Region.

There has been a considerable reduction in the build period in the series of ships being built under Project I 7A at MDL. For this ship MDL achieved a reduction of 14% in build period when compared to First-of-Class. With the technical support of Indian Navy Team and Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), Taragiri was able to complete her Sea trials and Final Machinery Trials within three (3) months from Basin Trials which is an achievement for this class of vessels. As regards the combat readiness of the ship, the SRGM, AK 630, Kavach and IRL has achieved operational levels prior delivery with combined efforts of MDL, Indian Navy and OEMs. Further, successful Test Firing of Brahmos has been completed by Taragiri prior commissioning which is a first in PI7A class.
The commissioning of INS Taragiri embodies MDL’s efforts towards the nation’s commitment to self-reliance in defense manufacturing with 75% of indigenisation, aligning with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. It underscores the collaborative excellence of the Indian Navy, MDL and a wide ecosystem of indigenous industries including a wide network of MSMEs thus creating numerous employment opportunities both direct and indirect. This successful induction reaffirms India’s growing stature as a global maritime power, capable of designing and building complex warships with indigenous expertise and innovation.
