High school basketball coach fired for pulling player’s braid

A controversial incident took place at Northville High School in the US, when 81-year-old Jim Zullo, the coach of the women’s basketball team, was fired after he pulled the braid of his star player, Hailey Monroe. The incident went viral on social media and caused a huge controversy among the audience.

The video showed Jim Zullo approaching Hailey Monroe after the match, who was seen crying. The coach pulled Hailey’s braid for no apparent reason and then started yelling at her. Hailey tried to escape, but Zullo continued to scold her. Meanwhile, another player tried to stop him, but there was no response from Zullo.

Statement from the district administration

The Northville Central School District expressed deep concern over the incident and said that it was “very upset” by the coach’s conduct.The district administration made it clear that Jim Zullo will no longer be the coach of the team.The school emphasized that they are addressing the matter with utmost seriousness and taking immediate action.The school stated that they will reach out to the affected players and their families to provide them with all the necessary support.

In his defense, Jim Zullo told News10 ABC that prior to the incident, Hailey had directed offensive language towards him when he instructed her to shake hands with the opposing team’s players.He said he did this to teach the player discipline, although many questions are being raised about his behavior in the video.

After the video went viral, there were strong reactions on social media regarding the coach’s conduct. Most users termed the coach’s behavior as completely unacceptable. One user wrote, “Her teammate tried very well to protect her!” While another said, “This behavior of the coach is absolutely unacceptable, there is no place for it in sports or anywhere else.” A third user commented, “Hair pulling is not ‘rough coaching’, but it is crossing clear boundaries of respect and safety. Coaches are supposed to build athletes, not humiliate or hurt them.”

Despite the incident, the Northville High School team lost the title game to La Fargeville, 43-37. Although the loss was tied to the game results, the incident took another controversial turn for the team and coaching staff.
