New Delhi, (BharatNeeti Correspondent): The expansion of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Odisha will not be an easy task for SAIL as the project site remains encroached and the steel maker is struggling to vacate it with the help of the state government.
Sources said the Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) has written a letter to the government of Odisha and sought its help in vacating the 1200 acre land on the which it plans expansion of its RSP to 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).
As per SAIL’s 35 MTPA production capacity target by 2030, RSP’s capacity will be increased from around 4 MTPA to 9.5 MTPA.
The expansion will be executed through a greenfield steel project by 2030. However the site where expansion is planned, it has been encroached by thousands of families who have been residing for years.
They have adjusted their social and economical life in and around the land located on the south east side of RSP.
SAIL plans to relocate all the families to a new location a little away from the existing location. The company will not only provide them with new homes but also basic amenities.
Any delay in vacating the land can affect timeline of SAIL’s 35 MTPA production capacity target by 2030.
As per the national steel policy, the government had set an ambitious target to scale up India’s overall steel making capacity to 300 MTPA.
