For the very first time Army Commanders’ Conference has taken place outside Delhi. The venue this time was decided to be Gangtok, in Sikkim. This move is being seen as one of a strategic importance as this was the very first time when such high level event of the Indian Army was held close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The first phase of the conference that was held on October 10 and 11 was presided over by General Upendra Dwivedi. The second phase of the conference is scheduled for October and is to be held on October 28 and 29 in New Delhi.

The meeting aimed at identifying strategic response to emerging challenges in the region. It will also be an event for taking stock of the situation at the Line of Actual Control specially in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh, the two states where India has been regularly witnessing a face-off with their Chinese counterparts.

It is believed that the outcome of the two phases of the conference, with the first one being held at a strategic location, will be crucial in ensuring that troops are well prepared for regional challenges and for the commanders to build strategies in accordance with the realities of the terrain.

The important issues to be taken up during both the phases of the conference include emphasising on civil-military fusion with DIME – diplomatic, information, military and economic, factors focusing on tackling of contemporary threats.

Further the conference aims at technological advancement into the forces and developing indigenous low-cost technologies to make modern warfare more effective.
