Bengaluru: ABB India has expanded its local manufacturing footprint with the launch of a new production line for variable speed drive (VSD) modules at its Peenya factory in Bengaluru. This strategic move increases the company’s domestic VSD production capacity by approximately 25%, reinforcing its commitment to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ initiatives.
The new line is designed to deliver high-power-rated drives for diverse industrial applications including buildings, data centers, water management, cement, and metals. With localized production, ABB expects to reduce lead times by up to 40%, enabling faster delivery and improved customization for Indian customers. The facility is also equipped to produce ‘made-to-order’ drives tailored to the evolving needs of key sectors.
“As we mark two decades of drives production in India, this expansion reinforces our strong commitment to advancing local production capabilities and delivering energy-efficient technologies for India’s industries,” said AR Madhusudan, Business Line Manager, Drive Products, ABB India.
The new line integrates cutting-edge automation and robotics to enhance productivity, safety, and quality. It features advanced sensor-based tools for precise component placement and real-time digital monitoring, aligning with Industry 4.0 standards. Robotics have also been deployed to streamline the movement of assembled drives, reducing manual handling and improving operational safety.
“As India accelerates its sustainability goals, ABB drives are playing a crucial role in enabling energy efficiency in Indian industries,” said Tuomo Hoysniemi, Division President, Drive Products, ABB Motion. “By building stronger local ecosystems, we are helping industries become more energy efficient while improving customer proximity, enabling them to outrun – leaner and cleaner.”
The expansion coincides with ABB’s global celebration of 50 years of innovation in VSD technology and two decades of production excellence in India. ABB’s drives have played a pivotal role in nation-building projects across sectors such as transportation, pharmaceuticals, and heavy industries. These drives optimize motor speed to match process demands, significantly improving energy efficiency and performance.
ABB India continues to lead in advanced manufacturing, setting benchmarks in energy-efficient electric motors and drives engineered for top performance even in hazardous conditions. The company’s commitment to technological excellence and sustainable growth remains central to its operations.
Globally, ABB is a technology leader in electrification and automation, with over 140 years of innovation and a workforce of approximately 110,000 employees. ABB Motion, the division behind this expansion, supports industries with digitally enabled motor-driven solutions across 100 countries, driving productivity, safety, and sustainability.
