India’s Mining Giant NMDC to Invest Rs 70,000 Crore Over 5 Years: Says CMD Amitava Mukherjee

New Delhi (By Vivek, BharatNeeti): Miner NMDC under the leadership of Amitava Mukherjee is making significant strides in the area of mineral exploration. NMDC has plans to spend Rs 70,000 crore as capex to increase capacity along with strengthening mineral evacuation infrastructure, its CMD Amitava Mukherjee said on Tuesday.

The company would also utilise the funds to install new age technologies across operations, he said. “This is not business as usual, 100 million tonnes by 2030 is a priority effort for NMDC, a once in a lifetime opportunity towards building a global mining powerhouse. We are looking at a capital expenditure of approximately ₹70,000 crore,” CMD (additional charge) Amitava Mukherjee said addressing a vendor meet in Hyderabad.

He also informed about company’s ambitious plan to more than double its iron ore mining capacity to 100 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) by 2030, from 45 MTPA currently.
The company’s vision is aligned with government’s national steel policiy 2017 which aims to scale up country’s annual steel production capacity to 300 MT.
NMDC’s production will help steel producers with smooth iron ore availability as it is the main ingredient used to manufacture steel.

NMDC is also looking mining operations outside India and is open for collaborations. The company’s share prices have been registering an upward trend since February 11, 2025 when it was 61.54 apiece to close at Rs 67.72 per share on February 21, 2025.
