New Delhi: Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL’s) performance in Q2 FY’27 reflects a quarter where operational intent translated into meaningful financial impact, with Profit After Tax rising by ~315% over CPLY. Chairman & Managing Director, SAIL, Dr. A.K. Panda commented that, “Q2 has demonstrated sustained focus on operations, production-sales synchronization, production & sales of Iron Ore, push on high value products, can convert into robust financial results when every unit works with clarity of purpose.”
The Company has delivered all‑time best Q2 production across hot metal, crude steel, saleable steel and finished steel, supported by improved fuel rate. This operational strength was reinforced by a decisive shift in product mix, with high‑value products volume wise growing 36% over Q1, signaling SAIL’s deeper push into premium segments in which demand remains resilient and margins stronger. The stabilisation of Vande Bharat wheel supplies to India Railways further demonstrated SAIL’s capability to meet stringent national project requirements. Dr. Panda noted that “our alignment of production with market demand both grade‑wise and profile‑wise is enabling SAIL to serve a wider and more diversified customer base, strengthening our presence across strategic sectors like infrastructure, engineering, defence and railways.”
Q2 FY’27 reflected SAIL’s growing strength in upstream operations. SAIL mines recorded highest‑ever quarterly production and sales, ensuring not only seamless availability of raw material for captive use but also generating additional value through surplus volumes supplied to the domestic market. Dr. Panda highlighted this emerging advantage, stating, “Our mining performance is steadily becoming a strategic enabler – securing raw material for our plants and creating incremental value through domestic market sales.” The steady momentum in mining added further stability to operations. The quarter also saw improved inventory discipline while focus on direct despatches both through rail and roads, ensured faster movement of material to customers and reducing turnaround time. Higher sales volumes, up 5% over CPLY, reflected this operational responsiveness. The enhanced share of finished steel in total saleable steel reinforced SAIL’s competitiveness, while marketing teams leveraged the improved product mix to deepen customer engagement.
The second quarter of FY’27 also marked a renewed organisational emphasis on safety. For the first time, specific large group interactions on safety were conducted across plants, indicating leadership’s intent to embed safety as a core operational value. Dr. Panda emphasised, “Productivity, safety and attention to equipment health must advance together – our renewed focus on safety is shaping a more responsible and resilient work culture that will support SAIL’s long‑term growth. The results of Q2 reaffirm that SAIL’s strength lies in its integrated approach – operational excellence, innovation and financial prudence working together.” With Q2 establishing a strong foundation, SAIL enters the remainder of FY27 with renewed confidence, sharper market positioning and a clear commitment to sustained operational and financial performance.
