New Delhi: The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), in partnership with BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), on Wednesday launched Phase II of EN-Powered Schools, a school education and engagement initiative aimed at strengthening energy conservation and energy efficiency awareness among students and teachers in Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) schools.

The launch marked the commencement of a two-day Teachers’ Training Programme at India Habitat Centre, bringing together educators from MCD schools across Central and East Delhi. Phase II of the programme will be implemented during 2025–26 and will directly engage over 17,500 students and more than 200 teachers across 81 schools, building on the success of Phase I conducted in East Delhi during 2024–25.

EN-Powered Schools is anchored in the belief that long-term energy transitions depend as much on everyday behaviour as on infrastructure and policy, and that schools are powerful spaces for shaping energy consciousness early in life. A key learning from Phase I was the role young students play as communicators of energy-saving practices within their families and communities.

On the importance of embedditeachers, literacy early and the role of schools in shaping sustainable behaviour, Dr Vibha Dhawan, Director General, TERI, said, “We start our journey in schools with our primary teachers; they are the ones who mould us and provide the foundation of our education. This reflects the immense power you hold to instill a deep-rooted green awareness in young minds, shaping their habits for a sustainable future.”

Parthasarathi Changdar, Additional Vice President, BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd shared, “By taking active, small steps to save electricity, we can effectively protect our environment, especially since much of our power still comes from fossil fuels. We recognize the direct impact this has on Delhi’s environment and pollution levels; therefore, schools and teachers play a vital role in shaping a greener future. By educating our students today, we are building a cleaner, greener, and sustainable Delhi for tomorrow.”

Phase II places teachers at the centre of programme implementation, with a strong emphasis on capacity building, contextual learning, and school-led action. The initiative introduces a new case-based Teachers’ Handbook titled, Rooms, Roads, and Renewables: Case Studies for the Classroom, designed to help educators move beyond theory and guide students through real-world, locally relevant energy challenges.

Teachers trained under the programme will mentor students in developing School-led Action Projects (SAPs) focused on assessing and improving energy use within their own school environments—encouraging practical learning, problem-solving, and ownership.

The two-day training programme includes expert-led sessions on energy audits in schools, behavioural aspects of energy consumption, the economics of electricity production and distribution, and the concept of just transition, along with interactive simulations and group-based ideation exercises.

A distinguishing feature of Phase II is its focus on teacher leadership and peer learning, recognising teachers as key enablers of sustained behavioural change. Structured training programmes will support educators in integrating energy education into everyday classroom practices and co-curricular activities.

Highlighting the shift from awareness to school-led action Taru Mehta, Associate Director & Senior Fellow, EEA, TERI said, “Energy education is not a separate subject—it connects naturally with science, mathematics, environmental studies, social science, and life skills. When students become Energy Ambassadors, they do not just learn facts—they learn leadership. Let us remember: Every unit of energy saved is a lesson learned. Every habit changed is a future secured. And every inspired child is a step towards a more sustainable nation.”

The programme aligns with national priorities on sustainability education and energy efficiency, while remaining rooted in the lived realities of students and schools in Delhi.
