New Delhi: Volks Energie, a leading energy solutions and execution-focused infrastructure company, has successfully completed a challenging multi-location project for Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), including high-altitude sites in Kargil and Leh, under extreme climatic and terrain conditions.

The project involved dismantling of existing VRLA battery banks and the erection, testing, and commissioning of newly supplied Ni-Cd battery banks across critical PGCIL installations. The batteries were manufactured by SAFT India. The Execution was carried out at Kargil (Ladakh) and Khaltsee, Leh, with on-ground temperatures in Kargil dropping to -9°C during peak winter conditions. Additionally, another project was executed at Yamunanagar (Haryana).

The project commenced on March 20, 2025, and was successfully completed on January 30, 2026. Despite snow-covered sites, logistical challenges, and harsh weather, Volks Energie deployed two specialised teams comprising five personnel each, ensuring adherence to safety standards, quality benchmarks, and timelines.

The decision by PGCIL to replace VRLA batteries with Ni-Cd batteries was driven by the need for higher reliability and longer operational life in harsh conditions, as Ni-Cd batteries can last over 15 years and avoid the sudden failure risks commonly seen in VRLA batteries.

Speaking on the Execution, Piyush Goyal, Co-Founder and CEO of Volks Energie said: “Executing projects in regions like Kargil and Leh requires a high degree of operational preparedness, workforce resilience, and planning precision. This successful completion reinforces our confidence in handling mission-critical infrastructure work across the extreme ends of India, regardless of geography or climate.”

In addition to the recently completed sites, Volks Energie has successfully installed and commissioned battery bank systems at multiple PGCIL locations, including Dehradun, Kochi, Pavagada, Trichy and Kancheepuram. In total, 15 battery banks have been successfully installed and commissioned across completed projects to date with many more lined up for the coming months.

The company is currently executing ongoing battery bank projects for PGCIL at Aligarh, Mainpuri, Varanasi, Ballia, Nellore, Munirabad, Kadappa, Panipat, Wagoora and Gaya.

The Kargil project comes on the back of another landmark project executed by the company in the state of J&K, where they successfully handed over an HVAC project for J&K PDD after completing 5 years O&M. This further strengthens Volks Energie’s position as a trusted execution partner for national power infrastructure projects, particularly in environments where reliability and resilience are non-negotiable.
