New Delhi: Oil India Limited (OIL) has successfully capped Well KSG#76 at the Kharsang Oil Field (KOF) in Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, operated by GeoEnpro Petroleum Ltd (GEPL). The operation marks a significant milestone in OIL’s well control efforts after a blowout on 30 October 2025 caused uncontrolled gas release during service operations.
OIL’s Crisis Management Team (CMT), supported by experts from Cudd Well Control, USA, and GeoEnpro Petroleum Limited, took charge on 1 November 2025. The team immediately mobilised to undertake the complex and high-risk task of safely removing the damaged Blowout Preventer (BOP) from the wellhead. The operation demanded precision, expertise, and seamless coordination.
Following the safe removal of the BOP, the pre-positioned capping stack was installed onto the wellhead. This critical step redirected the gas flow securely to the top of the stack, ensuring full containment and control. With the capping stack firmly in place, the BOP was successfully closed, effectively stopping the gas discharge from Well KSG#76.
The successful capping operation highlights OIL’s engineering acumen, meticulous planning, and strong collaboration between international specialists and local teams. Subsequent phases of the well control roadmap will now proceed in line with established operational protocols.
OIL acknowledged the resilience and dedication of its Crisis Management Team, experts from Cudd Well Control, USA, GeoEnpro Petroleum Limited, and committed field teams who worked tirelessly under challenging conditions. The company also expressed gratitude to the District and State Administration of Arunachal Pradesh, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MoPNG), and the local community for their steadfast support, which was pivotal in ensuring the safe and timely execution of the operation.
OIL reaffirmed its commitment to safe, sustainable, and efficient operations across all spheres of its work.
