Ghaziabad: Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, have successfully removed a 15 kg giant uterine fibroid from a 30-year-old woman. The patient ignored the growing swelling in the stomach for months, believing it would dissolve on its own or with medication. Upon diagnosis, this lump was found to have reached up to her upper abdomen and even caused her intestines to stick to it. A complex open surgery was performed by Dr. Ranjana Becon, Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynecology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad, and her team carefully removed the fibroid as well as an ovarian cyst and repaired her uterus.

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that commonly affect women before their menopause arrives. While most fibroids are small and asymptomatic, if left untreated, they can grow into giant fibroids, causing heavy or painful periods, pelvic pain, or abdominal swelling. Lifestyle factors, obesity, delayed pregnancies, and hormonal changes are contributing to the rising incidence of uterine fibroids. Though benign, untreated fibroids can cause infertility and, in rare cases, serious health issues. Depending on the size and symptoms, fibroids can be managed with medicines, non-surgical procedures, or surgeries like Laparoscopic myomectomy, which involves the removal of the fibroid while preserving the uterus.

Speaking on the case, Dr Ranjana Becon, Consultant – Obstetrics & Gynecology, Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad , said, “This was a highly challenging case due to the fibroid’s enormous size and the extensive adhesions involving the intestines. The patient experienced abdominal pain and heavy menstrual bleeding for months. More than 15 liters of fluid and blood were drained during the procedure, and her haemoglobin had dropped extremely. Although it required careful dissection and repair, we were able to preserve the uterus, giving the patient a chance at motherhood. Cases like this mark the importance of recognising the early warning signs, as timely diagnosis can prevent complications and save fertility.”

This highlights a significant milestone in complex gynecological care at Manipal Hospital, Ghaziabad. With advanced surgical expertise and multidisciplinary support, the hospital continues to provide fertility-preserving and life-saving interventions for women facing challenging reproductive health disorders.
